Apprenticeship Pathway

For high school juniors and seniors, Magnolia Project’s semester-long Apprenticeship Pathway allows students to make a meaningful contribution to a local business alongside trusted industry mentors.

Students identify interests and develop skills that they incorporate into their initial post-high school planning.

In preparation for their apprenticeship, students participate in personalized career exploration lessons. This curriculum helps them identify their passions and career interests, understand the community and local economy, and develop work-readiness competencies.

Students are also exposed to relevant workplace training, including workplace safety and compliance, sexual harassment prevention, and anti-bias and diversity training.

The signature experience in the Apprenticeship Pathway is spending 1-2 weeks off campus completing a meaningful project under the guidance of an employee in their field of choice.

As examples, students may build a website or create social media content for a local business, assist with the installation of a bathroom, bake bread at a bakery, aid with company-wide scheduling, or prepare and teach an elementary school lesson.

Students may opt to participate in potential callings such as public safety (firefighters and police officers), United States military (Navy, Army and Coast Guard), the arts (film, visual arts and theater), cosmetology, public service (local government officials), preschool and K-12 education, the trades (plumbing, welding, construction), fashion, sewing and design, and the death care industry. New mentors are recruited throughout the year.

At the program’s conclusion, students reflect on their experiences, sharing their conclusions with the school community, their family, and their mentor. Students also develop a plan for their meaningful next phase after high school, weighing costs and benefits of different options and identifying concrete next steps.

By adding their apprenticeship to their résumé, students gain a competitive advantage for their job search and/or college application process.
